The previous module established that exploratory testing needs structure — a charter, active observation, real-time documentation — to be a real discipline rather than aimless clicking. Session-Based Test Management is what turns that individual discipline into something a whole team can schedule, manage, and hold accountable, the same way a sprint turns individual work into something a team can plan around together.

Why This Matters

This serves two purposes: it makes sessions plannable and schedulable like any other work (fitting into a sprint the way a meeting or a task does), and it forces prioritization within the charter's scope, since a tester knows from the start they can't explore everything and has to make real-time judgment calls about where to spend limited time.

Debrief is a short conversation (often with a lead or peer) immediately after a session, reviewing what was covered, what was found, and what wasn't reached — this is what turns an individual tester's exploration into something the team actually knows about, rather than knowledge trapped in one person's head.

Session reports document the session's outcome formally: charter, duration, areas actually covered (which can differ from the charter's original scope, since exploration follows what's observed), defects found, and areas the session didn't have time to reach.

The "Not Reached" field is as valuable as "Areas Covered" — it turns an unstated gap (as in the opening scenario, where nobody could say what wasn't covered) into a visible, trackable fact the team can decide to schedule a follow-up session for, or consciously accept as a gap.
